Music video health and safety

No filming in inappropriate locations.

Check safety of location e.g. roads.

Minimize risk of theft of equipment.

When filming on location ensure teachers and a responsible adult know where you are and when you will return.

Check all equipment is working before you leave.

Ensure you have permission of filming if necessary.

Always film with at least one other person.

Ensure you have the permission of those you are filming.

Our location

These are to images of the locations that we chose to do our filming. The first image is China town in London where we began our filming and the second image is Leicester square where we shot some more of the scenes in our music video. We chose to film in London as we thought their was many locations to choose from and we also thought that London was a nicer setting rather than some closer to home like dagenham.

Friday, 13 November 2009

the clips that we have shot have been edited and we will decide which ones are going to be included within our music video. We are happy with the way the shots came out and we have achieved the shots in the way that we wanted them also.

Filming

We will continue to do our filming within the next as now we have begun fiming and we have our location. We have to find a second location for where the miming will be so before we bgin filming we will find another location for that.

Audience theory

Feminist film theory and film audiences- Cinema reflects society so therefore cinema reflects a patriarchal society.

Partriarchy and phallocentrism are linked and the pahllus is a symbol of power muc hlike how guns are used in films. Gun=phallus=power. This is similar to the male mid-life crisis where men buy a new car to help them and regian some of their youth and power suc has the jaguar e-type.

The gaze- The 'gaze' of the camera is the male gaze and the male gaze is active meaning the female gaze is passive. Within the narrative male characters direct their gaze towards female characters. The viewer is made to identify with the male look, because the camera films from the optical, as well as libidinal, point of view of the male character.

Thus three levels of cinematic gaze-camera, character and spectator-that objectify the female character (the triple gaze). Therefore the audience is constructed as though everyone is male.
Women are forced to look as thoug they were a male audience member.

Agency- In the classic Hollywood cinema the male protagonist has agency- he is active and powerful. He is the agent around whom the dramatic action unfolds. The female character is passive and powerless-she is the object of desire for the characters.

Laura Mulvey- Eroctic desires- Mulvey argues that women have tw oroles in film: As an object of erotic deisre for the characters and also as an object of erotic desire for the audience.

Digipaks

A digipak is a patented style of cd packaging and they are a registered trade mark of AGI media. Digipaks are made from papaerboard or card stock and on the inside it has one or plastic cd holders. Digipaks are mainly used for cd singles or for special edition of cd albums or dvd's. There are four styles of Digipak the smaller 4 page digipak or the much bigger 8 page and the DVD digipak just for DVD's.

Filming

We began filming yesterday and we got a good amount of footage that we can edit. The location we chose to do our filming was leicester square in London because this is a good location for us to get the shots in that we need for our music video.

Tuesday, 3 November 2009

Filming

We are going to find a location tomorrow and we will also begin filming tomorrow also. The main location that we are considering t do our filming is in London and we are going there tomorrow to find a suitable area to do our filming.

Audience theory

Suture: Classic Hollywood narrative and editing 'sutures' or positions the audience in certain ways making only one preferred reading possible, however unconscious the audience is of that position.

Reception theory

Given that the effects model and the uses and gratifications have their problems and limitations a different approach to audiences was developed by the academic Stuart Hall at Birmingham university in the 1970's.

This considered how texts were encoded with meaning by producers and then decoded (understood) by audience.

The theory suggests that: When a producer constructs a text it is encoded with a meaning or message that the producer wishes to convey to the audience.

In some instances audiences will correctly decode the message or meaning and understand what the producer was trying to say.

In some instances the audience will either reject or fail to correctly understand the message.

Stuart Hall identified three types of audience reading (or decoding) of the text:
1.) Dominant or preferred
2.) Negotiated
3.) Oppositional

1.) Dominant- Where the audience decodes te messages as the producer wants them to do and broadly agrees with it e.g. watching a political speech and agreeing with it.

2.) Negotiated- Where the audience accepts/rejects or refines elements of the text in light of previously held views .e.g neither agreeing or diagreeing with the polotical speech or being disinterested.

3.) Oppositional- Where the dominanat meaning is recognised but rejected for cultural, polotical or video logical reasons e.g. total rejection of the polotical speech and active opposition.

Audience decodes meaning/message: producer-dominant.
encodes-negotiated
meaning-oppositional

Planning

We have begun to fill in our planning sheets and when we have completed them we can begin the filming of our music video.

Planning

We have begun to fill in our planning sheets and when we have completed them we can begin the filming of our music video.

The uses and gratifications model

The audience are in control and consumption of the media helps people with issues such as: learning, emotional satisfaction, relaxation, help with issues of personal identity, help with issues of social identity and help with issues and aggression and violence.

Friday, 16 October 2009

Filming

We will complete all planning work that needs to be done and we will begin filming by the end of next week but we hope to be filming by tuesday at the earliest.

Thursday, 15 October 2009

The uses and gratifications model

The uses and gratifications model explains how the audience are in control of the media they consumer rather than it being the other way round . The audience are known as active and not passive because they are choosing to watch the media and the majority of the audiences that consume violent/disturbing texts don't copy what they have seen.

Tuesday, 13 October 2009

Uses and gratifications model

It is still unclear that there is any link between the consumption of violent media texts and violent imitative behaviour. This is flawed becuase man ypeople do watch violent texts but do not repeat the actions they see. Due to this reason a new theory was needed known as the uses and gratifications model.

Key evidence for the effects model

The BOBO DOLL experiment- The BOBO DOLL experimnet was apparently proved that children copy violent behaviour. The experiment was conducted by Alburt Bandura and in the experiment the children watched a video where an adult violently attacked a toy bobo doll. The children were then taaken to a room where they were not permitted to touch an yof the toys. The children were then taken to another room with bobo dolls and 80% of the children in the experiment imitated the violence they saw in the video. 8 months after the experiment 40% of the children repeated the same violence. There were many flaws with the experiment and its was found not to be correct.

The effects model

Key examples sited as causing or being contributory factors are:

The film child's play 3 in the murder of james Bulger in 1993.

The game manhunt in the murder of Stefan Pakeerah in 2004 by his friend Warren LeBlanc.

The film a clockwork orange (1971) in a number of rapes and violent attacks.

The film Severance (2006) in the murder of Simon everitt.

In each case there was a media and political outcry for the texts to be banned.

In some cases laws were, changed, films banned, and newspapers demanded the burning of films.

Subsequently, in each case it was found that no case could be proven to demonstrate a link between the text and the violent acts.

The effects model contributes to moral panics whereby: the media produce inactivity, make us into students who don't pass our exams or couch potatoes who make no effort to get a job.

The media produces violent copycat behavior or mindless shopping in response to advertisements.

Group

Our group now only has 3 members as one of the members has left school. Martyn, Jake and me are the members that are left.

Group meeting

We are going to have a group meeting and brainstorm our ideas on where to film and who will be in the video.

Tuesday, 6 October 2009

The effects model

The effects model- The consumption of media texts has an effect or influence upon the audience. It is normally considered that this effect is negative. Audiences are passive and powerless to prevent the influence. The power lies with the message of the text.

Group meeting

We will decide today what location we will choose to film our music video.

Tuesday, 29 September 2009

Filming

We hope to have all our planning done by this week so we can begin filming either this week or next week.

Mise-en-scene

In the mise-en-scene we can use the clothes which follow the gangster theme and the clothes are stylish as well as casual. The props used also follow the theme of the video and such props like guns are used.

First impressions

My first impression of the video is it seems as though its going to tell a story. The props and clothes are all the same theme which is a gangster theme. the opening scenes are quite tense before the music begins and it seems as though something big is going to happen.

Analysis of a music video

What genre of music do they produce? They produce pop music.

What sort of image do they have? They are well respected in the music industry and have millions of fans worldwide and they are also regarded as the 'King Of Pop'.

Who is their target audience? Their target audience is 16+ and their music appeals to both genders.

How successful are they/ have they been? They are very successful.

We saw a video by Bronski Beat who are a gay scottish band, we saw a video by so solid crew where each member had 21 seconds to introduce themselves and we also saw Bonnie tyler who was the first welsh artist to enter the U.S. charts. A controversial video we saw was Herbie Hancock 'rockit' as he was a black artist he was not allowed in the video although he featured for a few seconds in the video.
