Evaluation

1.) Our music video does use forms and conventions of real media products. Our story is based around a love story although is doesn't end happy and this is a plot that is used in many media texts especially music videos. The shots used are also familiar with many media texts. In our music videos that we researched we can see soem aspects of our video that are the same as real music videos. I fell that our music video does challenge soem aspects of real media texts due to the fact that oru video doesn't happily ever after as many that have the same storyline as ours do.I think the the shots we used are similar to thse that can be found in professional standard music videos and i feel that the shots we used helped our msuic video achieve the final result that we got. We have found a video that has a comparison to our music video and the location is that same and some of the shots are similar.

This is one of the comparisons we found to our music video another video by an artist called Devlin. In the background the London eye is visible in both videos and the background colors is also similar.

On the right is the shot From Devlin's video and on the right is that shot from our video and the location is very similar and the shot is the same aswell.

2.) I feel that our music video, digi-pak and magazine advert work really well and show our creative side as well our music video because we used technology such as imovie and photo shop. I feel that the standard of our digi-pak and advert our to a good and all most professional standard and compliment our video really well. Both our digi-pak and magazine advert contains us the band members as we feel that is was good for the audience to see us it gives effect to the overall picture. On the digi-pak we felt that it looked good for us two have the images of us on the inside either side of the CD and we also put our signatures onto the images to make it look more like professional standard work. On the outside of the digi-pak we chose the color white because we both agreed on it and on the front of the digi-pak there is the front page which contains the bands name. On the back page we have the song titles are where they are purchasable and the production company and on the third side we put graphics on there of the band name in different colors to represent the band name. On the magazine advert we decided than again to get the best effect that we should include pictures of ourselves. We used magazine comments and ratings to make it seem more professional as all magazine adverts contain them. Yet again we decided to use ITUNES because thats where the song is purchasable from and so therefore its vital to include that. We also decided to include HMV in case people wanted to know where the CD was available from. We along with the title are the centre-piece of the advert and for the background we decided to use flashes of colors because the original picture was taken against a plain wall and the background also looks effective.

3.)Audience feedback- We received good audience feedback because we created a survey and a good number of people took the survey and the results were positive for us. We received some good ratings for our video such as 8/10 and even 9/10 and the lowest mark we received was 7/10 which is good for us to know that people enjoyed to watch our music video. Some of the people who took our survey even said that they enjoyed the enough enough they would enjoy to watch it again.

These are spider diagrams of all the technology that we used to video our music video, digi-pak and music magazine advert. Some of these technologies we were accustom with whereas some other we weren't as good with.

Survey on survey monkey

I created ten questions about the video

I created a Survey Link so I can paste this link anywhere and if people click the link it will take them straight to my survey

I have now come back and edited this post, below is the results:

In every yes-no question we got 100% yes, i would make a chart for all of them but theres no point so i will make one here for:
Every answer for yes-no question

Analysis of our music video

Camera work: In our music video have used many different shot techniques and angles. Some of the shots we used were long shot, close up , mid shot, low angle shot, over the shoulder shot and shot-reverse-shot. In total we have 55 clips within our music video containing a large number of shot sand techniques used. We made sure that our shots were positioned within the frame by using the centre line tool on the camera.

This a POV (point of view shot) which shows what i am looking at. This a good shot to use because it allows the audience to feel involved within the video.

Lighting: One of our locations was London and we wanted to film at night. The problem with night filming is that its hard to see the footage but we choose areas around London that were full with bright lights making the footage a great deal more visible. The other we have was in a park where we shot in daytime therefore there was no need for us to use any additional lights.

Colour: We didn't aim to include many colours in our music video but did want the backgrounds to be quite bright especially when filming at night. In this shot you can see the back ground of London with many lights which is what we wanted for our video. There is also a mixture of colours in this background such as black, blue, purple and yellow/white.

Mise-en-scene: There was no make-up used for our video we did make sure that we presented professionally and that we had not dirt or Marks on our faces or clothes. We did a few props in the video such as the mobile phone which features a few times within the video and the drinks can also. When we where positioning ourselves within the shots we chose extra about where we going to be. If we wanted to be positioned centrally then we used the center line tool on the camera. In some of the shots we wanted the position to not be central that was because we wanted to shot the background or the surrounding area of our location. We chose a few shots with facial expressions to show the mood of the particular scene.

In this particular shot we wanted to show a sense of unease because i have received a text and was unsure what to do about it.

In this particular scene i have arrived at the destination i was trying to get to and there i a slight sense of joy as well as nervousness as i am unsure whether i will have been stuck up.

Editing: Our song was fast paced therefore we felt we had to make a video that was appropriate. In total our video contained 55 clips over a 3 minute which means we didn't have space for many long dwelling on shots also our song was fast so to many long shots wouldn't work well. In our music video we used a variety of transitions and effects as we wanted the video to feel like a professional standard music video. We didn't directly use montage but we used a similar way of montage. We see the image of the text saying sorry then we see the clip of my face which is upset. We see the two images and we know that he has been turned down. We used a few jump cuts when were filming up London because i would be walking down the street then it would cut to Martyn signing then it would go back to me and i would be walking somewhere else. We used fades in our video especially when we see a lip syncing clip. We used fades in and out when ever there was a lip syncing clip as we felt that would give the video more of a professional look.

Critical theory

Laura Mulvey: Laura Mulvey's theory is that society is patriarchal(male dominated) and our video does support her theory in some aspects. The main character within our video is male and the story follows him on a journey. The singer within the video is also male which furthermore adds to Laura Mulveys theory. The audience are made to look from a mans point of view in some of the scenes when im reading the texts and other point of view shots also.

Propp: Propps theory states that films contain eight characters who make up the story of the film. His theory dosen't apply to our music video because his theory is mainly representing of films.

Todorov: This theory does apply to our music video because there is an equilibrium and a disequilibrium. The equilibrium is when i received the text in the beginning and go to meet the person. The disequilibrium is when i arrive at the destination and the person i wasn't meeting wasn't there then a new equilibrium occurred when we rewound to the beginning and i delete the text.

Levi-Strauss: Levi Strauss theory suggests that narratives are based around binary oppositions e.g. young-old and that they are in conflict. This theory doesn't represent our music video. Our music video doesn't include binary oppositions at conflict therefore his theory doesn't fall into our category of music video.

Audience theory- effects model: The effects model suggests that audiences are effected by the media that they consume. The effects model doesn't occur for our music video as are video does not convey any strong messages are influences in any way. We feel confident that people can watch our music video without being influenced in any negative way.

Uses and gratifications model:We feel that this theory does represent our music video in some way. Our music video is meant to be watched a source of entertainment and as i said before no strong messages are conveyed within our video. The audience aren't obliged to watch our video therefore the uses and gratifications model does represent our music video.

Reception theory: Our music video has little evidence that it complies with the reception theory. At the beginning of the video the messages of the video was clear to see based on the shots that were used therefore the beginning of the video didn't represent this theory. The second half of the video and the ending showed a little bit of representation towards this theory. One of the moments where a message is encoded and is not obvious is when the video rewinds back to the beginning and the message is that he realizes that he is going to be stood up.

Suture: Suture doesn't apply to our music video because we don't want the audience to feel a certain way about our music video so they can have an open view of it. The message of the video is a neutral one therefore the audience isn't stitched into a particular view point.

Individual contribution: For our music vide oi feel that i have made a very good contribution and that without the work i put the video wouldnt be to the standard it is. I was the one who was being filmed when we was in London and i suggested many locations and shots that were used in the music video. I uploaded all the footage that we had from London and i also edited all the footage that we had from London. I helped film the lip syncing scenes and i uploaded the footage to the computers and i also did alot of the editing work on that also. The digi-pak and music poster was based around both our ideas so they were a joint effort.

Narrative:Levi-strauss

Levi-Strauss and binary oppositions(two things opposite to each other).

Levi-Strauss argued that a structure of narratives was a dependence on binary oppositions.

A conflict between two qualities or terms.

These binary oppositions can form the basis of narratives.

E.g. Young<> Old, Male<> Female

For example: Gender- Narratives can be organized through binary oppositions of gender stereotypes.

Gender Stereotypes: Masculine
Professional
Strong
Rational
Competitive
Independent
Aggressive
Ruthless
Ambitious

Gender Stereotypes: Feminine
Domesticated
Weak
Emotional
Co-operative
Communal
Passive
Sensitive
Supportive

Binary oppositions( Levi-Strauss)

Constructions of gender roles in narratives lead to a series binary oppositions

Dominant vs subordinate
Dominant
Male
White
Middle class
Middle aged
Heterosexual
Able-bodied

Subordinate
Female
Other ethnic groups
Working class
The young, The old
Homosexual,Bisexual
Disabled

Example-The western
Homesteaders-Native Americans
Christian-Pagan
Domestic-Savage
Weak-Strong
Feminine-Masculine
Garden-Wilderness
Inside society-Outside society

Example: The Iraq and Afghanistan wars
East-West
Barbarism-Civilization
Feudal-Modern
Despotism-Democracy
Fundamentalism-Freedom
Backward dirty weapons-Modern "clean weapons"

Narrative:propp

Analyzed folk stories
8 key characters

1) Protagonist (hero)
2) Antagonist (villain)
3) The doner (gives the hero a magic item)
4) The helper
5) The father
6) The dispatcher (sends the hero on the mission)
7) The princess
8) The false hero

Narrative

What is narrative?

Story
Plot
Narrative is the way the story is organised

Elements of narrative
Time
Closure- tie up all the loose ends
Enigma- a problem

Classical Hollywood narratives:
Linear
Few,if any sub-plots
Tendency towards closure

Theories of narrative

Todorov- Equilibrium, disruption, resolution ( solve enigmas), new equilibrium

Music video research

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hll-thWi7Y0&feature=related

I have found a a really good A2 music video for the killers Mr Brightside.

Filming

We have some footage but its not a good enough standard at the moment so we are going to get the rest of our filming done today so we can begin editing it. Once the video is complete we can looks at designs for our music adverts and digi-pak covers.

Editing

I am almost finished editing but i have come across a few problems because there are gaps in the video that we cant seem to be able fill. We will have to try and find out a solution because we want the music video finished by today so we begin starting our music advert cover and digi-pak.

Music video

We have all the filming finished now and are editing so we can get it finished. We will then be able to get started on our music advert and digi-pak. I am am editing now and for some of today and i hope to have the music video finished by the end of today.

Music advert

TheSea.jpg

This is the magazine advert for Corinne Bailey Rae's album the sea. The cover shows her lying on a blanket in the woods which is a simple image with not much going on but its quite effective.

Music advert

delphic
This is a music advert for a band called Delphic. The cover looks quite simple but its effective as they have used he effect of them falling and their heads are disappearing as streams of smoke. They have used all their band members in this advert cover which is a good way of promoting each band member and the band as a whole.

Research

I think that our music video would be played on a TV channel such as Q because the song we chose was an indie song and a channel such as Q play indie music.

Music video

We have made many changes from the storyboard to the final product. We have changed the location where we done the lip syncing. We kept to the storyboard when we were filming in London. Whilst filming we had many problems because we tried many locations to film to lip syncing but they were also being used. When had no problems when we filmed in London because we knew were we wanted to film and were able to get the shots we wanted.

Music video

We have filmed the final parts of the music video and have edited them so all we have to do is put the bits together then we will have finished our music video.

Magazine advert

Music advert

Filming and editing

We have filmed the lipsyncing and i have edited the footage that we got. I fouind some problems with the editing becuase it was hard to get the music in time with lipsyncing. I eventually managed to do it but our teacher saw the video and decided that we need to do more lipsyncing which is a problem becuase the deadline is on friday.

Friday, 5 February 2010

Editing

I have edited the ending of our video, when the lip syncing is finished and the song is finally stopped. I only had to edit a few seconds off of these clips because they were small clips anyway.

Thursday, 4 February 2010

Filming

We have done some more filming now and i am now going to edit it now. We filmed the ending part of our video and we have now found a good location to do our filming. We are going to try and film the rest of the video today.

The Beatles-rain

This was the first music video ever made and the Beatles made it because they didn't enjoy being mobbed by fans whenever they toured.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYe5Q1ZRgIQ&feature=rec-LGOUT-exp_fresh+div-1r-8-HM

Filming

We are having trouble filming because we cant find a suitable location or when we do find a good location its being used for a class. This is causing a big problem for us because the deadline is coming up and we still need to film, edit and make sure that the lip syncing is in time with the music.

Thursday, 21 January 2010

Tuesday, 19 January 2010

Location

We have found a good location to film our lip syncing. We have permission to film there all we need is a suitable time when the room is free. We also have to ask for permission to borrow instruments from the music room for our music video.

Tuesday, 12 January 2010

Music video

WE are going to film the rest of our music video within the next so we will have enough time to edit it as well as create our digi-pak cove as well.

Tuesday, 5 January 2010
